A pre-workout supplement is a newer kind of formula that was originally created to help bodybuilders plow past muscle building plateaus and to help with low-energy slumps due to the daily grind of workout wear-n-tear. The formula’s for the most part are comprised of Nitric Oxide, BCAAs, glutamine, arginine, creatine monohydrate, and a caffeine based stimulant or stimulants that when combined correctly, can push the bodybuilder past the normal rep. range and typically pro-long the workout routine with added intensity.
In addition to that, there are significant studies that show an increased rate of lean mass gains over longer periods continued use.
Needless to say, the pre-workout supplements proved to be a hit amongst bodybuilders which triggered a massive study, analysis, product trials, and inevitably a massive production of pre-workout supplements coming from all the top supplement manufacturers from around the world.
The newest pre-workout discovery which has had every bodybuilder in a frenzy is Nitric Oxide, a vasodilator which forces more blood into the muscles which in-turn, provides more nutrients during the vital rebuilding stage of muscle growth.
The main ingredients you should be looking for is Nitric Oxide, Caffeine, Arginine, Beta-Alanine, and Creatine Monohydrate. Most if not all products will contain these ingredients so its not necessarily a matter of if they contain them but rather, how much is in it and what are the positive effects the entire product has on the bodybuilder.
That being said most people will base how good a pre-work supplement is based on the following criteria:
1. How much of a pump did I get from one serving?
2. How focused was I while training?
3. How long did I feel the effects and is there a crash?
4. Did the substance mix well and taste good?
5. Did I make any gains from using it?

Below I have put together a list of the top 10 pre-workout supplements based on these criteria. I have not only personally tried each and every one of them, but so has hundreds of other fellow lifters. The top 10 are ranked from 1-10 scale, 10 being the absolute perfect formula. The results that where based on hundreds of customer feedback surveys taken from…

“Behold the new #1 N.O. supplement for 2010! NO Extreme by Cellucor is my absolute favorite pre workout supplement. I really had my doubts, especially since I’ve tried just about every pre workout supplement there is, I wasn’t expecting much. I took some in the morning before my normal arm routine and hit the gym. I felt the “world class pump” that everyone’s been talking about for 4 hours. The taste was great and I didn’t feel bloated and full, like I drank 5 beers. After using this one for over 2 weeks, the pumps, mental focus, and endurance hasn’t wavered a bit. It’s just as good as the first time. It’s a bit more pricey than the rest, but you get what you pay for here, trust me. I love this product.”

“The cherry lemonade taste was good which surprised me. Talk about under the radar products. You don’t hear much about Nos Ether but let me be the one to make you aware of a killer pre workout formula that delivers insane pumps consistently, over and over again. What I like about this stuff is that I don’t get over caffeinated to the point that your kidneys give out, nor does it lack that caffeine kick that you expect and often times rely upon to get you in the mood to crush steel. Its a great product that stayed below the radar no more. Come experience this years top rated under-dog for 2010!”
“This is the best pill form version of pre workout supplements currently available on the market today, perhaps the best one period. Its refreshing to be able to take some pills instead of mixing up a drink like I usually do (right now im using White Flood – thumbs up). Anyway, when taking this product I noticed an increase in strength about 4 days into using it. I was able to handle 315 lbs. on bench a lot easier than usual. I was reping 3 sets of 12 easily. Also, for some reason, the pill form is a little easier on my stomach than the other powder forms. You certainly cant go wrong here. Plus, there is 45 days worth of supplement here, a huge plus in my book .”
“There’s some good buzz going on about Assault. The percentages of the main ingredients of creatine, N.O., and energy stimulants goes perfectly with the Blue Raspberry flavor. There’s only 1 gm of sugar per serving so there is no unnecessary calories to take in. The pump is just as good as any other and you can clearly feel the Pyru Glutamic Acid working because I felt good and confident with my workouts. You get 2.6 pounds which will last you about 25 days so not exactly 30 days but for those 25, you’ll have a hell of a workout.

“The lemon lime taste is good and mixes well. When I first tried this product I noticed a tingling sensation to go along with the incredible pump that I got. I took it 15 minutes before I hit the gym and I felt it in 1o! I did legs and stomach and I was hell bent on tearing up the squat rack. I knocked out 5 sets of squats and my whole body was pounding. I was ready for more so I hit the leg press and I was equally pleased at how focused I was as well as how long my endurance lasted. Legs is usually a weak spot for me so when I finished my entire workout in about 1 hour 15 minutes about 20 minutes ahead of schedule I was surprised. The only down side is that you run out fast and you’ve got to buy more.
“N.O. Xplode was really one of the pioneers of the new Nitric Oxide supplements that has virtually taken over the pre workout supplement line-up. This brand new version of the old school N.O. Xplode is definitely a worthy predecessor. I have tried both the fruit punch and blue raz sticks packs (fruit punch being my favorite out of the two) and have been very impressed with both. This is BSN’s new stab at the N.O. Xplode brand that although was decent, it did have some flaws in it like lack of sustained energy, and a sharp decrease in effectiveness over pro-longed periods of time. Apparently the people at BSN has taken heed to the complaints of their consumers and have in turn delivered on the goods with N.O. Xplode NT. This version of Xplode is hella potent. I don’t believe that you should make this your first N.O. experience. This product is for the hardcore lifters that just want to hurt something.”
“Overall one of the best nitric oxide products I have tried. It has clean and smooth energy that lasts for a good part of the day. It is a little intense during the first hour but if you train hard enough you should be set. If you read some other reviews, and I have, most people think that this is one of the most under-estimated N.O. products out on the market today. I’ll take White flood any day of the week over all this other hype crap. You feel it in about 20 minutes so make sure you are ready to lift, do cardio, or whatever it is you do because it will kick your ass if your not ready… I don’t know why white flood didn’t score as high as jacked or ether because its just as good.”
“This pre workout supplement is good but not as smooth as White Flood or Ether. The pumps were not Earth shattering, but that may be because I have been taking alot of different pre workout supplements and I may have built up my tolerance. I really don’t have any negative comments about it because it is on par with the more popular products like SuperPump 250 or N.O. Xplode. Right now you can get a free mixer plus an additional 10% off your purchase as a special promotion that wont last long. If your not a pre workout guru and just want a reliable product that is easy on the wallet then this is your N.O.2 “
“This is one of the only pre workout supplements that is in pill form that made the list. That should be a good indication to you about how well this one did. There is no doubt that powder form N.O. supplements are better because your body can absorb the ingredients quicker, but still there are instances where the pill form would be better. Say if you are on the road and don’t have time to mix up a drink, you could just pop the pills with a drink and be done with it. So as far as flavor, there is none, but the effects such as mental focus and “pump” where definitely noticeable, but I wouldn’t say they were the best out of the bunch. This is a solid product that will work, its just not the best.. .”
“Labrada products have been around for a while and has proven their products before like the Lean Body meal replacement drinks that everyone loves. Not to many people are aware of the fact that Super Charge Xtreme is a very underrated N.O. product that I for one was impressed with. I tried the grape and the fruit punch – both of which were decent tasting, and the pump I got was good, no headaches or gitters, just clean pumps for a good 3 hours. I would recommend any one try Xtreme N.O. It taste good, gives you great sustained muscle pumps and the results will speak for themselves.”
“Gaspari Nutrition is always a safe bet. Good solid products that do exactly what you want it to do. The first thing that I would like to point out is the great taste and mix-ability of this product. I liked the grape cooler flavor the best, but the Orange was good too. This N.O. supplement is great for 2 reasons – It give you a great pump, and it helps to increase muscle density. There have been reports of this product keeping people up at night, so be aware of the fact that if you workout at night-time you should either workout earlier so you can take the recommended amount, or just plan of reorganizing your garage at 12:00 at night.”
“This supplement was good with a nice even energy rush which didn’t leave me jittery at all. I noticed that I started to shed some body fat while on this product, not to say i didn’t with the others, its just that I noticed it more with this one. Focus was great and my strength did increase significantly. If you read the write up on it the guys at VPX claim a 53% increase in leg press strength over a 4 week period. I found that to be a astounding claim so I had to see it for myself. My beginning leg press was 540 for about 3-4. After 4 weeks my leg press increased to 675 for 4. That’s a 24% increase which is still impressive for me because I have always had trouble with strength gains with my legs, especially the leg press. Overall I like NO Shotgun, but I wasn’t crazy about the taste and I found it to be a bit pricey. I have always like VPX because I think they do a good job at explaining the science behind their products and with this one, it offers you more than just a pump, but actual gains which can be measured.”
Looking for pure creatine? How about 2000 mg worth? Many people who really try to go pure will just want to take creatine monohydrate in powder or pill form. I prefer powder form because I take it 20 minutes before I workout and I have increased stanima in the gym. I like Optimum Nutrition 2000 mg because there is no stimulants, but its a high dose. The 12oo mg bottle is good for beginners, but the big 2000 mg is for people that want results.
The most important thing to remember before taking a pre workout supplement is that you must take it in cycles. Meaning that if you are currently taking a pre workout supplement or have just finished one, then you should take a 2-3 week break before starting another one. This rule also applies to ANY supplement that contains stimulants like caffeine. If your taking a fat burner for instance, and want to begin taking a pre workout supplement than you need to wait that 2-3 week period before starting so you can start clean and feel the full effects of the product.

Dude, this is a pretty complete list you got here. With real good recommendations. Ive been reading alot of positive reviews on Jack3d and White Flood around the net.
Ive tried Superpump 250- worked well.
N.O. Xplode- been there got tired of it half way thru it.
USP labs has been putting out some good products. I would recommend that you stack Jack3d with Recreate by the same company -USP labs. This guy I know at the gym has been screaming about it for weeks. He seems to be getting some decent size.

Any of these supplements will help but that is not their primary function.

A couple of months ago, i tried the musclespeed for the first time. The feedback was good on it so i decided to try it out. I can definitely attest to the strength and power increases i got from it. The boost in focus is great with no crashes. Overall, down about 8lbs of fat. It’s a good one for sure.

I am curious, what would happen if you were to alternate between thru a few of these each week? Like say take the Jacked on Monday,White flood for teh next worked out and the musclespeed for the weekend? Would that be bad or just expensive?any advantage to doing that?

I started off with the NO shotgun. Which is still my favorite. I’ve also tried the Jack3d, which was good but made my stomach hurt but gave a good pump and increased both endurance and strength. It ran out in two weeks, and it didnt really mix that well. The No Explode was also good and did the same as the shotgun but didnt taste as good and if you shake it instead of stiring it, it will blow the top off your mixer cup. The vasocharge, which i am trying right now has done nothing in the way of pumps or endurance, maybe it just akes longer to work but thats what ive expirienced.

As long as you can handle the effects of the stimulants as well as the cost of buying each one, I don’t see a problem with it, but if you did do it that way you wouldn’t know which product was working for you and which one wasn’t. Sometimes it takes a few weeks of constantly taking a product to really begin to realize its benefits.

I’m almost 15 years old. does anybody have any reasons why i shouldn’t take any of these supplements? Also, which supplement is the best for your money?

Preston,
There are several reason why you shouldn’t take these supplements.
1. Your body has not fully developed yet and these ingredients are very powerful, you don’t want force-feed your muscles while they are underdeveloped.
2. These supplements are designed for serious athletes and bodybuilders not kids.
3. Right now you should be focused on doing basic lifts and exercises to build a foundation, you shouldn’t try to run before you can walk.
4. I don’t recommend any kid to take any supplements besides a multivitamin because you haven’t even gone through puberty yet. Let you body develop naturally before you start to supplement it.
Bottom line – If you want to get strong there are dozens of things you can do to get stronger that do not involve taking potent supplements like these. Start by eating more protein and veggies each day, build a foundation, and don’t even think about taking any of these for several years.

If you are 15 and serious about athletics (I assume you are a Freshmen or Sophmore), join a sport or program offered at your school. It will help you focus on one particular area or athletics. In addition, your coach will help you with any questions you have in regards to your workout and it will be geared towards your age and what is acceptable for you and only you. If you are reading these post and are looking to add size strength and cut fat, maybe a good avenue would be wrestling. It intails a hardcore workout. I am old enough to be your father and I would give the same advice to my son. You will get a great cardio workout along with muscle strength. One tip that I would recommend and it is an area that I ignored as a youth is BREAKFAST. Most kids are too tired and to rushed in the morning to take a good 10 minutes to fuel up for your day. Chances are if your hitting the gym, it’s after school. Breakfast will give you fuel all day long and prevent you from having premature fatique during your afternoon workout. You can get some great diet programs online that will help you plan a great healthy energized breakfast for a full day of fuel. A couple last words of advice Preston, KICK ASS!
